Africa Visa Requirements Tool

Choose your passport and a destination to see whether you can enter an African country visa-free, get a visa on arrival, need to apply online (eVisa or electronic travel authorisation) or must apply at an embassy. The tool covers all 54 African countries for about 200 passports. Visa rules change often, sometimes with little notice, so treat the results as a starting point and confirm with the destination's official immigration website or embassy before you book.

Understanding Visa Types

🟢 Visa Free

You can enter the country without any visa for a specified period (usually 30-90 days). Just present your passport at the border.

🔵 Visa on Arrival

You can obtain a visa when you arrive at the airport or border crossing. Payment is typically required in cash (USD or local currency). Processing is usually quick but may involve queues.

🟡 eVisa (Electronic Visa)

You must apply online before travel and receive approval electronically. Print the eVisa approval and present it upon arrival. Processing time varies from instant to several days.

🔴 Visa Required

You must apply for a visa at an embassy or consulate before travel. This usually requires documentation, fees, and processing time of several days to weeks.

Important Travel Tips

  • Passport Validity: Most countries require your passport to be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay
  • Blank Pages: Ensure you have at least 2-3 blank pages in your passport for stamps
  • Yellow Fever: Many African countries require proof of yellow fever vaccination
  • Return Ticket: Immigration may ask for proof of onward/return travel
  • Processing Time: Apply for visas well in advance - some can take weeks
  • Fees: Visa fees vary widely and are subject to change
  • Extensions: Some countries allow visa extensions after arrival
  • Regional Agreements: ECOWAS (West Africa) and EAC (East Africa) members often have special arrangements

The Most Open Countries for African Travellers

In our dataset, Benin, The Gambia, Rwanda and Seychelles let citizens of every other African country enter without a visa. Seychelles is visa-free for almost all nationalities but asks visitors to obtain an online travel authorisation before arrival. Comoros, Djibouti, Madagascar and Mauritania issue visas on arrival to nearly all African passport holders. At the other end, Sudan, Algeria, Egypt, Eritrea and Libya require most Africans to obtain a visa in advance.

Regional Free-Movement Areas

  • ECOWAS (West Africa): Citizens of the 12 member states can travel between them without a visa for up to 90 days. Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger left ECOWAS in January 2025, so check current arrangements when travelling to or from those three countries.
  • EAC (East Africa): The 8 members (Burundi, DR Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda) allow easier travel for each other's citizens; Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda also offer a joint East Africa Tourist Visa for visitors.
  • SADC (Southern Africa): Most of the 16 members give each other's citizens visa-free short stays, although a few pairs still require visas.
  • African Union: The AU's 2018 Free Movement Protocol aims at visa-free travel across the continent, but few countries have ratified it so far.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which African countries are visa-free for all Africans?

According to our dataset, Benin, The Gambia, Rwanda and Seychelles admit citizens of every other African country without a visa. Several other countries have announced further relaxations, so check official sources for the latest rules.

Do US citizens need a visa for Africa?

It depends on the country. US passport holders can visit countries such as Morocco, Tunisia, South Africa, Botswana, Senegal and Mauritius visa-free, get a visa on arrival or an eVisa in many others, and need an embassy visa for a few, including Algeria and Sudan.

What is the difference between an eVisa and an eTA?

An eVisa is a visa you apply for and receive online before travel. An electronic travel authorisation (eTA) is a lighter pre-travel approval used by visa-exempt visitors; Kenya, for example, uses one. Both must be approved before you board.

How often do African visa rules change?

Frequently. Several countries changed their rules in 2024 and 2025 alone, for example Namibia began requiring visas from US, UK and many European visitors in April 2025. Always confirm with the destination's official immigration website or embassy shortly before travel.
