What you will find on the site

Where our information comes from

We compile figures from public, widely used sources and state the basis where numbers change over time:

  • Population: United Nations World Population Prospects 2024.
  • Economy: International Monetary Fund World Economic Outlook and World Bank data.
  • Countries, borders and capitals: United Nations membership and geoscheme, national government sources and standard reference works.
  • Maps: the labeled political map of Africa is a public-domain US government map; interactive maps use OpenStreetMap data (© OpenStreetMap contributors).
  • Distances: great-circle (straight-line) distances calculated from city coordinates with the haversine formula. Flight times are estimates, not timetables.
  • Visa information: compiled from public visa-policy datasets. Entry rules change often, so always confirm with the embassy or official government portal before you travel.

Accuracy and corrections

Borders, capitals and statistics change. Examples we track include Burundi's move of its political capital to Gitega (2019), Zimbabwe's new ZiG currency (2024) and the war in Sudan since April 2023. Population and GDP figures are estimates and may differ slightly between sources.

If you spot an error or an outdated figure, please tell us through the contact page and include the page address.

Disputed territories and naming

We count the 54 sovereign states that are members of the United Nations. Western Sahara is shown as a disputed territory and is not counted as a country. Where a country has two common English names we give both, for example Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast), Cabo Verde (Cape Verde) and Eswatini (formerly Swaziland). We distinguish the Democratic Republic of the Congo (capital Kinshasa) from the Republic of the Congo (capital Brazzaville).

For teachers and students

Maps and pages on AfricaMap.net are free to use in classrooms, homework and presentations. Printable blank and labeled maps are on the downloads page, and the map quiz can be used for revision.
