How to Play
- Choose a difficulty. The game starts straight away and the timer begins.
- Read the prompt. The box next to the map shows the country to find.
- Click on the map. If your click is close enough to the centre of the country, it is marked green and its capital is shown. If not, a red circle marks your guess and you lose 5 points, so try again.
- Use a hint if stuck. The hint button gives a clue, such as "Narrow country between Ghana and Benin", for 5 points.
- Finish all 54. When every country has been found, you see your final score, time and accuracy.
Difficulty Levels
- Easy (10 points per country): Every country is marked and labelled on the map, and clicks are accepted within a wide radius. Use this mode to learn the layout.
- Medium (20 points): No country labels are added, and your click must be closer to the country's centre.
- Hard (30 points): No labels are added and the tolerance is tightest, so small countries such as Rwanda, Togo, Eswatini and the island nations need precise clicks.
The background is a standard OpenStreetMap map, so place names on the base map are visible at every level. For a true blank-map test, print our blank Africa map. To practise capitals and flags as multiple-choice questions, try the Africa quiz.
Tips for Learning Africa's Countries
Learn one region at a time
Start with North Africa, which has six large countries along the Mediterranean and the Sahara. Then move to West Africa, the region with the most countries (16). The tables below use the UN regional groupings.
Use anchor countries
Egypt (north-east corner), South Africa (southern tip), Nigeria (inside the West African bulge), the DR Congo (the huge country in the centre) and Somalia (the Horn) are easy to spot. Locate their neighbours from them.
Remember shapes and extremes
- The Gambia is the smallest mainland country, a thin strip along the Gambia River inside Senegal.
- Senegal has the westernmost point of mainland Africa, and Tunisia the northernmost.
- Lesotho is completely surrounded by South Africa, and Eswatini almost so.
- Algeria is the largest country by area, followed by the DR Congo and Sudan.
- There are six island countries: Cape Verde and São Tomé and Príncipe in the Atlantic, and Madagascar, Comoros, Mauritius and Seychelles in the Indian Ocean.
- South Sudan is the newest country (independent since 2011). Western Sahara is a disputed territory and is not one of the 54.

How many countries are in the Africa map game?
The game includes all 54 sovereign African countries recognised by the UN, including South Sudan. Western Sahara is a disputed territory and is not included.
